Biography / Contact
Peter Verhoog is one of Europe's most acclaimed underwater photographers. His work is published monthly in (diving) magazines, and frequently featured in newspapers and books.
Peter Verhoog was born in 1955. He learnt to dive in 1976, and took his first underwater photographs in 1978.
During his journeys he explored many exotic places on this planet, where he encounters nearly every underwater creature imaginable: from miniature shrimps to great white sharks. His work also frequently portrays the subtle beauty of the coral reef structures with their complex and vulnerable biotopes.
He captures the great predators of the blue waters, the creatures inhabiting the colourful coral reefs of tropical waters, but also the fascinating shapes and animals in the green Dutch sea.
Peter Verhoog stands out of the crowd because of his own specific style in underwater photography, characterized by the exquisite use of both available and artificial light. He was one of the first photographers using twin strobes, for which he developed special photography techniques.
His work has been published in major newspapers (a.o. Algemeen Dagblad, NRC Handelsblad, Parool, Telegraaf), magazines (a.o. Aquanaut, Asian Diver, Diving A Fondo, Duiken, Duikkrant, Focus Photo Magazine, Fotografie, Geo, Grasduinen, Man of all Seasons, Meridiani, Dutch National Geographic, Natuur, Wetenschap & Techniek, Onderwatersport, Rodale's Scuba Diving Magazine en website, Science & Vie Junior (several editions), Skin Diver, Sportdiver, Tauchen, Nikon Pro and Nikon Calendar, books (a.o. the IKAN fish guides of Helmut Debelius, other identification books like those of Paul Humann, the book 'Aldabra' and special Aldabra calendars, many educational books) and countless other publications through stock agency Foto Natura in Wormerveer, the Netherlands.
His work is also frequently used for travel brochures and advertising purposes.
Peter is also a member of the prestigious expedition team of stock agency Foto Natura (sponsored by Nikon), which consists of 6 photographers. The team was accompanied by a film crew during their expedition to the Seychelles last year, focusing on the Aldabra Atoll. It was Peter's main task to take pictures of the many predators and other marine creatures of this atoll.
